#73 Planting the Flag on Iwo Jima, 1945

Image:

Poster Caption: US forces had a fierce air, naval, and land battle for Iwo Jima, a tiny, heavily fortified island in the South Pacific held by 20,000 Japanese troops. US
Marines landed on February 19, 1945, and took heavy losses. The sight of the US flag over Mount Suribachi on February 23 boosted the morale
of the US forces, but it took a month to secure the island, resulting in 6,800 Americans dead and 19,000 wounded. This poster was used to raise
funds to support the war effort. (Published by the US Treasury Department, 1945. From the Gilder Lehrman Collection, GLC09520.34)

These posters are 22" x 30", full color, and printed on a semi-gloss white stock. Each one features a caption that places the image in historical context.
