Poster Caption: In a surprise attack early on the morning of December 7, 1941, more than 350 Japanese airplanes bombed the US Army and Navy bases at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The bombs killed more than 2,300 people.Twelve ships were destroyed or beached and nine damaged; 160 planes were destroyed and another 150 damaged. This photograph shows Navy personnel assessing damage at the Ford Island seaplane base.America declared war on Japan on December 8. Three days later Germany declared war on the United States, and the US reciprocated, joining the Allied effort to defeat the Axis powers.
