Poster Caption: The great abolitionist, orator, and writer Frederick Douglass was a self-emancipated former slave from Maryland. In this image from his second auto­biography, My Bondage and My Freedom (1855), written seventeen years after his escape from slavery, Douglass presents himself in the clothing and posture of an established public figure.
