At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 70,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World to soldiers’ letters from World War II and Vietnam. Summary of Content: Letter has signature, but it is illegible. It appears to be a person with the last name Sartoruis and a note in pencil at the top of the document indicates the person was an admiral, although this could not be proven. Writes to offer melons from his "quinta" (means vineyard in Portuguese) to the recipient. Letter is dated 26 August, but no year was provided. Sartorius was British Admiral in 1861, he served in Portugal after 1865.
